Proven fertility therapies include intrauterine insemination, IUI
A variety of factors can interfere with an individual’s or couple’s ability to conceive a child. Innovative Fertility Center physician and medical director, Dr. Mark Rispler, identifies common causes of infertility and recommends the appropriate steps, including intrauterine insemination, IUI. When you seek treatment at our Manhattan Beach fertility center, Dr. Rispler will perform a complete evaluation so that he can determine the right plan that will ultimately enable you to have a healthy baby.
When to consider IUI treatment
Often, IUI therapy represents a reasonable first approach, especially when unexplained infertility appears to be contributing to the problem. In these situations, in which Dr. Rispler cannot find a definitive issue with either partner, our fertility doctor often begins by combining ovulation-inducing medications with the IUI procedure.
For cases involving mild male factor infertility, endometriosis-related issues or semen allergies, treatment via IUI can improve the odds of a successful pregnancy.
For lesbian couples or single women, IUI with donor sperm is the front-line treatment.
Artificial insemination circumvents problem areas
If the quality of the cervical mucus, low sperm count or slow swimming sperm are hindering the chances for conception, Dr. Rispler may select intrauterine insemination, IUI, as the treatment recommendation.
Bypassing the cervix, IUI involves depositing the sperm directly into the uterus, allowing the sperm to more easily move into the fallopian tubes.
Conception rates for an IUI range from 30 to 40% when cervical mucus creates the problem, and 14 to 40% when sperm movement is the issue.
What to expect from the IUI procedure
Usually, upon completing diagnostic testing, Dr. Rispler begins the IUI process by prescribing fertility medication and monitoring your cycle to watch for signs of ovulation. Your partner will need to provide a semen sample, which our technicians will prepare to achieve the healthiest sample for the insemination.
During the actual appointment with your fertility doctor, you can expect an experience similar to a pelvic exam. Dr. Rispler will inject the sperm into the uterus using a thin catheter. Immediately following the insemination, patients will spend 20 to 30 minutes lying down before leaving. Most women resume their normal activities within 24 hours of the appointment.
At our South Bay fertility center, Dr. Rispler employs established treatments for infertility, including the use of IUI therapy. We partner with our patients to determine the best strategy for each specific situation. To learn more about the IUI process, call our office and schedule a consultation.
