Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, PGD

PGD can help patients achieve healthy pregnancies

At Innovative Fertility Center, Mark Rispler, M.D., recognizes that our patients need assistance to create the families they desire. We offer state-of the art fertility treatments at our Manhattan Beach fertility center, including preimplantation genetic diagnosis, PGD. With PGD, Dr. Rispler can help patients achieve pregnancy success.

Why our Manhattan Beach fertility center utilizes PGD

When preconception testing at our Manhattan Beach fertility center reveals that a couple carries a gene for a specific genetic disorder, Dr. Rispler typically recommends PGD. Dr. Rispler often compares PGD to a bloodhound tracking the scent for one specific genetic disease. Some of the genetic disorders that PGD can identify include cystic fibrosis (CF), Huntington’s disease, sickle cell disease, muscular dystrophy, polycystic kidney, Tay-Sachs and hemophilia.

Enlisting PGD at Innovative Fertility Center

Patients may know that they are at risk for certain genetic disorders, because one of the partners has the disease or is a carrier. Most of these patients will have completed preconception testing to identify the need for PGD. If testing reveals that a couple is at risk for transmitting a genetic disorder to their children, Dr. Rispler will recommend IVF with PGD. Dr. Rispler also utilizes PGD for couples seeking gender selection.

PGD offers a proactive approach to successful embryo transfer

Dr. Rispler will enlist the lab at our Manhattan Beach fertility center to perform PGD, allowing him to identify healthy embryos to transfer during an IVF cycle.

  • Ovulation induction, egg retrieval and fertilization in the laboratory proceed as usual during a round of IVF with PGD.
  • Each Day 5, 6 or 7 embryo is biopsied and six to eight cells are sent to the reference genetics lab for evaluation. The remaining cells continue to divide without disturbing the embryo’s development.
  • The reference genetics lab sends a report, allowing Dr. Rispler to identify which embryos are unaffected by the genetic disorder and can be selected for transfer.

The combination of preconception testing with preimplantation genetic diagnosis gives parents peace of mind. PGD can reduce the chances for passing on inheritable diseases, as well as provide information that Dr. Rispler can use to respond to recurrent miscarriage or failed IVF cycles.

We understand that fertility treatment and genetic testing can feel overwhelming. Dr. Rispler and our team are available to answer any questions you have about PGD. Contact Innovative Fertility Center for more information on the applications for preimplantation genetic testing.
